Is Tinned Fish the Perfect Hunting Snack?

Is Tinned Fish the Perfect Hunting Snack?

When I was in Idaho last year for his elk hunt he shared camp with a few old-timers for a couple days.

As stories were getting told around the campfire the conversation drifted to hunting snacks and one of the graybeards claimed he had THE absolute best hunting snack figured out.

Tinned anchovies.

Ummmm gross... or at least that was my (and a few other folks') initial reaction. Indignant and with an eye towards convincing the group, this individual disappeared into his tent and soon returned with, you guessed it, a tin of anchovies in olive oil.

Now, I consider myself an adventurous eater and I'll try anything once... but I've had anchovies before and never really liked them. This particular tin of anchovies was no different.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that they are, in fact, a pretty good hunting snack.

Lightweight, packed with good calories and good fat, and (assuming you like them) tasty enough.

Luckily for me (and you) there are more options out there than anchovies!

Say Hello to Fishwife

While the name seems a little funny at first, Fishwife is a woman-founded and led food company aiming to make ethically sourced, premium, and delicious tinned seafood a staple in every cupboard... and your hunting pack.

They've got a full line up of delicious variations that includes:

  • Smoked Rainbow Trout
  • Smoked Salmon
  • Smoked Mackerel
  • Albacore Tuna
  • Sardines
  • Anchovies
  • Mussels

You already know I'm rocking with the trout, salmon, and tuna. Let's take a deeper dive and look at some nutritional info:

As you can see, the macros on these bad mammajammas are pretty solid. Couple hundred calories, solid protein, good fat, virtually no carbs (which you're no doubt getting from your other snacks!), and a minuscule amount of added sugars (in the chili crisp versions), if any at all. These stats will easily go head to head with your favorite protein bars and lets be honest... after the 10th cliff bar of the trip you're ready for something else, right?

I definitely plan on having a few of these tins in my "truck kitchen" this hunting season and when I'm ready to switch things up I'll be tossing one or two into the pack... maybe with some Tillamook singles (IYKYK).

Now, if you've read this for you're in for an additional treat. Right now you can save 10% off your order at Fishwife by using the code CRC10. So treat yourself to a trip to flavortown and put those savings into your gas tank to chase more critters.

Enjoy!
